About this MOTD Editor

Use this free Minecraft MOTD editor to write your server list message, preview exactly how it appears in the multiplayer menu, and copy ready-to-paste settings for Java or Bedrock.

What is a Minecraft MOTD?

The MOTD (message of the day) is the text players see when they browse the multiplayer server list. It is one of the first things that sells your server — season name, gamemode, player count hooks, and your join address all belong here.

A strong MOTD uses Minecraft color codes for contrast, keeps within the character limit, and reads clearly on both lines. This tool shows a live server-list preview while you edit so you do not have to restart the server to check every change.

Export for Java, Paper, BungeeCord, and Bedrock

When your MOTD looks right, export it in the format your setup uses: server.properties for a single Java server, Paper config snippets, BungeeCord proxy settings, or Geyser-compatible Bedrock MOTD lines.

Templates for survival SMPs, PvP arenas, minigame networks, and crossplay servers give you a polished starting point. Swap in your colors, server name, and IP — then paste into your config.

MOTD color codes and line limits

Java Edition MOTDs allow roughly 59 visible characters per line across two lines. Bedrock and Geyser setups can use longer lines. The editor tracks length per line and warns you before text gets cut off in the client.

Click color and format buttons to insert codes, or paste from our color code generator. Bold, italic, and reset codes work the same way they do in chat and on signs.

Common questions

Where do I put the MOTD on a Java server?
Open server.properties and set the motd= line to your formatted text. Restart the server or reload config for the change to appear in the server list.
Why does my MOTD look different in-game?
Some proxies and older clients render colors slightly differently. Always check the preview here and in your actual server list. Avoid relying on very long lines on Java Edition.
