The well-known names charged more than the product was worth, and the budget hosts cut every corner that mattered.

We had run servers ourselves. We knew what a good host should feel like: the machine is fast, the price is the price, and someone answers when something breaks. None of the options we tried hit all three. After enough of that, the conclusion was simple. We could do it better, and we could do it for less.
